Tonkatsu - (とんかつ)

What Exactly is Tonkatsu (とんかつ)?

If you watch anime, you’ve probably seen this dish pop up from time to time—and trust me, it looks just as delicious in real life as it does on screen!

Tonkatsu (とんかつ) is a mouthwatering dish made from tender pork loin (or fillet), breaded and deep-fried to golden perfection.

The name comes from Ton (meaning "pork") and katsu, short for katsuretsu, which means "cutlet."

Many restaurants in Japan specialize in this crispy, savory treat, and no tonkatsu meal is complete without a side of fluffy rice, freshly shredded cabbage, and a generous drizzle of tonkatsu sauce!

Is There A History Behind It?

Did you know tonkatsu wasn’t always made with pork?

Before becoming the beloved dish we know today, it was originally made with beef!

Introduced in the 1870s during the Meiji Era, tonkatsu was considered a yōshoku (Western-style) dish. But a few decades later, beef was swapped out for pork, giving us the crispy, juicy treat we enjoy today!
