"People only find me interesting because they can’t tell whether I’m serious or not.” – Killua Zoldyck
Hey, have you heard about Killua Zoldyck?
He's the third child of Kikyō and Silva Zoldyck and was supposed to be the heir to the Zoldyck family. But —he runs away from home to avoid all that and becomes a Rookie Hunter instead.
He's best friends with another Rookie Hunter, Gon Freecss. They're super close.
Killua's got this really pale skin, spiky silver hair, and these striking blue eyes. His eyes change shape depending on his mood. When he's in assassination mode, they get all narrow and sharp.
He went through a lot of intense physical training and even torture when he was young, which gave him a really lean build at the start of the series. But as time goes on, he gets more toned and muscular.
He usually wears baggy clothes, like long-sleeved dark shirts with turtlenecks and baggy shorts. Sometimes the shorts are shortened to above the knees in different adaptations. He also has blue boots that are brown in other versions.
When he was a kid, his hair was longer, almost reaching his shoulders. He used to wear a hoodie in the trademark colors of blue, with grey pants and shoes.
“Who wants to have their life planned out for them?” – Killua Zoldyck
Did you know Killua is the middle child in the Zoldyck family, famous assassins?
Since birth, he's shown incredible promise in training under Silva and Illumi's guidance.
From a young age, he mastered many killing techniques and became one of the family's top assassins. At just three years old, his training in tailing put him in risky situations multiple times.
He fulfilled three requests from Alluka, which awakened Nanika's powers. Curious about controlling it, he learned its secrets. He kept this hidden from his parents until Mitsuba told them.
At six, he competed in the Heavens Arena, reaching the 200th floor in two years. By seven, he mastered darts as part of his training.
At age nine, he met Canary but respected her wishes to keep their distance due to their different statuses.
Once, his family doubted his assassin instincts and had Illumi implant a needle in his head to shape his character through fear. But Killua later removed it, reclaiming his subconscious and freedom.
At eleven, tired of killing, he rebelled against his family, injuring his mother and brother. He ran away to join the Hunter Exam for fun, having already surpassed the Bombers in assassinations!
“Gon, you are light. But sometimes you shine so brightly, I must look away… Even so, is it still okay if I stay at your side?” – Killua Zoldyck
When Killua first appears in the anime, he's portrayed as somewhat similar to Gon.
Gon is known for being cheerful, cheeky, and always brimming with mysterious ideas. However, there are some differences—Gon is very polite, whereas Killua can be a bit rude, especially to elders and strangers.
Killua has a major sweet tooth, famously spending nearly 200 million dollars on snacks at Heaven's Arena. His absolute favorite? Anything chocolate, especially chocolate balls.
He's one of the quickest thinkers in the anime, adept at analyzing situations with precision, likely due to his assassin training since childhood. Despite his youth, his pragmatic thinking and knowledge often make him seem mature beyond his years.
Confident in his abilities, Killua often questions Gon's skills and compares himself to others. Over time, though, he becomes more humble and easily embarrassed by compliments, especially from Gon.
There's another side to him, though—his ruthlessness and lethal skills paint him as deadly and bloodthirsty. Yet, his loyalty to friends and innate kindness add a conflicting layer to his character.
He considers Gon his first real friend and grows increasingly attached to him over time. Killua's loyalty is evident as he often sacrifices greatly to protect his friends without complaint, disregarding his own well-being.
Historically, Killua's greatest fear has been those stronger than himself, like his brother Illumi. He was taught by Illumi to always be cautious and only engage in combat when victory is assured, which sometimes hinders his hunter instincts.
Another trait of Killua's is his vulnerability to gambling, notably in Greed Island where he wagered his life for a slot machine reward.
In contrast to Gon, Killua is emotionally and intellectually mature and adept at controlling his anger.
“Assassination — It’s the family trade. We all take it up. My folks see me as an exceptional prospect. But I don’t see that I should have to live up to their expectations.” – Killua Zoldyck
So, what can we learn from our friend Killua?
I think the most important lesson he teaches us is that we don't have to follow the same path as our family or conform to their expectations. We're individuals with the right to choose our own journey, wherever it may lead us.
