What Exactly is Takoyaki (たこ焼き)? This tasty treat is another dish that is often flashed on the screen, with our favorite characters chowing down on it!
What is it exactly, though?
Takoyaki (たこ焼き) is a common Japanese snack or appetizer that is shaped like a ball. It is cooked in a specially molded pan and made from a wheat-based batter.
Oftentimes, this delicacy is filled with diced octopus (referred to as tako), tempura scraps (known as tenkasu), or green onions (also called negi).
After the balls are formed, they are brushed with takoyaki sauce (which is very similar to Worcestershire sauce) and mayonnaise. Afterward, they are sprinkled with green laver (aonori) or shavings of dried bonito.
As with many other Japanese dishes, there are numerous variations of the takoyaki (たこ焼き) recipe, especially when it comes to the sauce. Some variations may include ponzu (a soy sauce with citrus vinegar and dashi), goma-dare (a sesame and vinegar sauce), or simply vinegared dashi.
The “yaki” part of the name in Japanese cuisine comes from the word yaku, which refers to a cooking method meaning “to fry” or “to grill.” This is why you will see “yaki” in many other dish names, such as okonomiyaki, for example.

Is There A History Behind Them?
This tasty dish was first created and popularized in Osaka at a shop called Aizuya. A street vendor named Tomekichi Endo is credited with its invention in 1935.
The first known takoyaki (たこ焼き) was made with beef and konjac, but it was later changed to use octopus, which is now the traditional filling. Additional flavor was also added to the batter over time.
A small, round dumpling called akashiyaki, which originates from the city of Akashi, is what inspired takoyaki. Akashiyaki is made with an egg-rich batter and octopus.
Takoyaki (たこ焼き) was originally popular in the Kansai region, but over time it spread to other areas of Japan, such as the Kantō region. The dish has long been associated with yatai (street food stalls), as well as many well-established specialty restaurants, especially in Kansai. However, it can now be found at a variety of places, including supermarkets and convenience stores.
Takoyaki (たこ焼き) is also very popular in Taiwanese cuisine, largely due to the influence of Japanese culture.
