Juuzou Suzuya - (鈴屋 什造)

“Why should I apologize for being a monster? Has anyone ever apologized for turning me into one?” – Juuzou Suzuya

Juuzou Suzuya is popularly known as a Special Class Ghoul Investigator in the anime Tokyo Ghoul. He initially partnered with Yukinori Shinohara but has since risen to lead the Suzuya Squad.

Previously, he investigated the Binge Eater in the 20th ward before moving on to tackle the ghoul Nutcracker in the 13th ward.

Furuta declared him "The Next Arima" after Kishou Arima's passing, signifying him as the newest and strongest investigator at CCG, also granting him control of the S3 Squad.

Suzuya, characterized by his pale skin and pure white hair, accessorizes with red hairpins forming the Roman numeral XIII. He modifies his body with stitches, forming X's below his right eye, on his bottom lip, and weaving down his neck, arm, and hand.

In Tokyo Ghoul: re, Suzuya's appearance undergoes significant changes. His hair is dyed black, and his stitches follow a new pattern. He dons a black suit with red suspenders featuring yellow triangle patterns. A prosthetic leg replaces his maimed one from the Owl Suppression Operation.

His hair grows out again, often styled in a ponytail or bun. The stitch marks under his right eye revert to the original two X's, while he removes stitches from his lip. Hair clips shift to XX, symbolizing the 'Judgement' Tarot card.

"Try not to hate me too much, okay?" - Juuzou Suzuya

Suzuya's childhood personality could be described as relatively normal, albeit influenced by the trauma inflicted by Big Madam, which twisted his demeanor. Stripped of the ability to feel pain or fear and lacking significant morals, he was dubbed a "problem child" by his mentor, Yukinori Shinohara, due to his disturbing and violent tendencies.

Suzuya prides himself on his clean, efficient killing methods, devoid of unnecessary movements, a skill he holds in high regard. Consequently, he doesn't hesitate to eliminate anyone.

Despite being innocent, Suzuya was blamed for numerous animal deaths perpetrated by Goumasa Tokage and Tooru Mutsuuki during his time with the CCG, serving as a scapegoat while the real culprits escaped justice.

His emotional disconnect leads him to confront opponents head-on, regardless of the danger, sometimes to his disadvantage, as seen when he faced the Owl alone when assistance was necessary.

Initially lacking empathy, Suzuya's bond with Shinohara awakened his capacity for love and empathy, evidenced by his anguish upon realizing Shinohara's importance and his guilt for failing to protect him.

Over time, Suzuya matures, exhibiting warmth and inviting demeanor alongside his remaining childish traits. He evolves into a skilled mentor and leader, demonstrating empathy by offering advice to Tooru Mutsuki about facing fears.

While dedicated to the CCG's mission, Suzuya's ruthless determination to eliminate ghouls remains unchanged, as evidenced by his unwavering resolve to fulfill his duty, even towards adversaries like Big Madam.

"You shouldn't turn your back on the enemy."- Juuzou Suzuya

Suzuya, known as Rei during his kidnapping as a child, was raised by the powerful and influential ghoul called Big Madam. Under her deceitful torture system, he was trained to perform circus acts to entertain ghoul customers, earning "Good Boy Points" for compliance.

Transitioning to work at the Ghoul Restaurant as a scrapper, Suzuya adopted the name Juuzou. His first kill left him sick for days, marking a turning point where his morality began to erode.

Big Madam, concerned about his appearance as he matured, often dressed him as a girl and crudely castrated him. Eventually, he was rescued during a raid on her estate, but his violent tendencies raised concerns.

Yukinori Shinohara advocated for Suzuya, emphasizing his status as a victim deserving of a second chance.

“If an angelic being fell from the sky and tried to live in this world of ours, I think even they would commit many wrongs.” – Juuzou Suzuya

I think the most important lesson learned from Suzuya's situation is that regardless of the circumstances, people deserve a second chance, and you must fight for those you love.

Either stand for something, or you will fall for anything!
