Curry Bread - Kare Pan (カレーパン)

What Exactly is Kare Pan?

Kare Pan, or Curry Bread (カレーパン), is a delicious and popular treat in Japanese culture. It's definitely one of those dishes I’d love to try if I ever make it to Japan!

This tasty delight is made with savory Japanese curry, wrapped in fluffy bread, coated with breadcrumbs, and then deep-fried to perfection. While some variations are baked, the most popular version is crispy and fried.

The name breaks down into "Kare" (カレー), meaning curry, and "Pan" (パン), meaning bread in English. You can find Kare Pan in convenience stores and bakeries across Japan—it’s one of the most common and beloved pastries around! So, if you love soft, warm bread and flavorful curry, this is the treat for you!

However, the most common one that comes up time and again is from nearly a century ago, in 1927. It’s said that the owner of a bakery called Cattlea Karepan created this delicious treat, drawing inspiration from the Western style of deep frying.
